Around 5pm On Sunday May 2, 2010 Kluckin Films president and founder Dwayne King, accompanied by thirteen crew members, to include a two-year old infant, arrived at Surfside Jenny's Restaurant in Surfside Beach, SC, to film a scene for a movie they are working on. Upon their arrival they discovered Zack Gonska (19) and several other boys around the same age sitting on the eatery's back porch. The youths were playing loud rap music and drinking alcohol.
Minutes later, according to eyewitnesses Gonska disappeared from Surfside Jenny's, leaving the filmmakers alone with the gang of intoxicated minors without forcing them to leave. Within minutes, Zack Gonska entered the restaurant, grabbed a tripod and hurled it out into the parking lot. Then Zack brandished a .22 caliber rifle and handed another youth a 9mm. pistol and opened fired, with the rifle, inside the establishment. Fortunately none of the thirteen-person film crew, to include a two-year old infant, were injured.
As the film crew were forced into the parking lot, at gunpoint, King dialed 911. After Surfside Beach police arrived no arrests were made or charges filed, even though the officers on scene retrieved the 9mm. handgun, but the .22 rifle had mysteriously vanished. According to Collins no statements were taken from any of the eyewitnesses or victims; and the officer in charge summed up the entire incident as a "huge misunderstanding", quickly releasing the eyewitnesses and victims from the scene.
The armed and dangerous youths were not cited for anything, even under-age drinking. In addition to guns being fired at them, Kluckin Films special effects makeup artist, Bracey, stated at the time that he was struck on the back of the head with the rifle, by one of the youths, as he was exiting the restaurant.
According to reliable sources, Gonska was present during the entire incident, watching from a concealed spot near the back of the building, and denies his son having possession of a firearm , also claiming the filmmakers instigated a confrontation.
It is indeed a sad indictment of society's increasingly dangerous times when a harmless, unarmed group of artists nearly lose their lives to a gang of hostile, drunken under-age adults with firearms. To top it all off the local police department did nothing but sweep the entire episode "under the rug", virtually erasing any evidence of the incident ever happening only because it involved "one of their own".
The police report is full of discrepancies from the truth and the 911 tapes have not been produced! This was investigated by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division as well. It seems they can not find reason to pursue it any further.
