Thanksgiving Has My Head Reeling

This may be because I was born Pisces in this body. If you know anything about astrology; or even payed attention to the astrological symbols in the daily horoscopes, then you will know that the symbol is two fish swimming in opposite directions at all times.

What do you mean you're head is reeling, you ask? I understand what actually happened to cause a yearly observance of thanks to erupt into something that stands for what we are thankful for and an excuse to get the family together no matter what.

Each family has their own tradition and some pass the same traditions down generation after generation. This is a time for forgiveness and happy reunions. A time for first born babies to spend their first year, learning how its done, with their new family. A time when we travel to gather with family and friends when we wouldn't otherwise.

We begin to remember all the nice people we have around us and start to count our blessings. Its a time when the people, you would least expect, to actually stop to say hi or drop you a card. Heck, they may even just ring your phone, but the thought is there none the less. What we care about is what we think about. What we think about is what we act upon. This is just how we are programmed. We can't help it.

So with all the positiveness that is psychologically intertwined into this day's representation how can anyone (in their right mind) have a negative thought about it? Okay, I'll tell you.

The true accounts of what happened are much different than the fairy tale we grow up with; school play and all. How would the school board be justified in having children act out being captured Indian slaves in a boat? And how in the world would you choreograph the message that there are small pox on those blankets the Pilgrims gifted to the Indians?

Thanksgiving all started when the Pilgrims held a great feast honoring Squanto and the Wampanoag Indians. Fact is that they got to Massachusetts Bay and Squanto was the only Patuxet Indian still alive; who was also an English slavery survivor. Squanto was able to act as peace keeper, because he had learned their language. He also helped to put a peace treaty together between the Wampanoag Nation and the Pilgrims. On top of all that he taught them to sustain themselves. The one and only time the Pilgrams and Indians sat down and feasted together was the one year anniversary since the English and the Wampanoag Indians had begun to work together.

That's not even where it starts! The year was 1614 and a few English Explorer Ships started home with boatloads of captured Indians to use as slaves. While on Indian Soil the English People actually littered the Indians land with much needed blankets which had been infested with Small Pox. There was no known cure for Small Pox back then and the English knew it!

What happened next was a natural instinct of the human race and has been happening since the start of time.

People from all over the world began to hear of this wonderful "Paradise" world. Because there were no fences, when they arrived, they just thought that is was free reign to take as they pleased. I find it peculiar that the first ones to do this were the Puritans. Not only was the land confiscated, against the Peace Treaty, but they had to do something with the people who inhabited it, if they wanted it for their own. The Indians that didn't spec up to being a slave was just murdered.

Of course no one is going to just let someone come in and take over their land, homes and community. This all erupted into what is know as the Pequot War; coined one of the bloodiest wars fought be Indians.

Let us fast forward to the year 1637

We're now in Massachusetts Bay Colony. John Winthrop has just declared a yearly remembrance and "Day of Thanksgiving" because over 700 of the Pequot Tribe happened to gather there. It was their intention to joyfully celebrate their annual Thanksgiving. They called this "Green Corn Festival". In the middle of the darkness the Dutch and English mercenaries surrounded the resting Indians and all that would come out, into the darkness, were clubbed, shot or otherwise murdered in cold blood. Those who stayed inside where killed by fire while still alive. Heck there was a Thanksgiving feast after each massacre and boy there were a lot of them.

These are just some of the real reasons this day that everyone calls Thanksgiving occurs annually. I am just thankful that these killing rituals aren't happening anymore, but more so that this is not the message (or idea ) we get when we think of Thanksgiving today.

I have to say I am thankful for every little thing.

When I say every little thing that is exactly what I mean. I am totally connected to nature and the universe. I feel the vibrations of the earth turning, the waves crashing upon the sand, the wind blowing, the trees growing...... I appreciate each second spent, even the smallest morsel of food, my humble shelter, every blessed kilowatt of electricity and drop of water, every article of clothing, each smile, the tiniest thought and so much more.

They say you can't miss something if you have never had it. But tell me, how appreciative can one be if they have never been without? How appreciative can you be if you learn to be a ruthless distructo who just goes around taking what they want, no matter who they hurt? I am so very thankful for the fact that Thanksgiving, in our day and age, has a warm, inviting feel. So now you see how I am torn about this annual Day of Thanksgiving.
