Its A Sweepstake, But What Is Really Going On Here?

Kandi's Treasures

Until about 12 years ago mail order and mailed sweepstakes entries were a way of life. In the mid 1990's, Some of my acquaintances thought it odd to be reading a “How to win sweepstakes” paperback, which was a free prize.

That book taught me about much more than how to do everything right to ensure that my entry is going to be valid. This book taught me about how the postal system works and how to ensure that a piece of mail would not be stalled and increase my chances it will actually reach its destination. And that was just the beginning of what I absorbed.

What brings me to write today is that I stopped and actually read the HGTV Dream Home 2011 Giveaway Rules. I can not tell you how many sweepstake rules I have read through, but, never have I read anything like the ones for HGTV Dream Home 2011 Giveaway. I got a funky feeling in my gut and just had to tell you about it.

So from what I am reading at the rules, which state that, in according to United States laws; you can win a pre-existing home located in Stowe, Vermont, fully furnished, other merchandise, a 2011 GMC Acadia Denali, a “Doggy dream home” and $500,000. None of which the Potential Winner gets to choose. How can it be a “Dream Home” to anyone but HGTV? What if the Potential Winner does not like what HGTV chooses?

You can always opt out of taking the house and all the trimmings. You are offered the option of taking $650,000 in cash; in addition to the $500,000 cash prize and 2011 GMC Acadia Denali. In the end you are still responsible for all taxes, tags, and title fees; real estate transfer taxes, deed recording charges and closing costs where applicable.

you are given a variety of ways to enter which is pretty much standard among sweepstake rules. I thought I would never finish reading through the sponsors lists or high number of exempt parties listed. Then I found out that there is not any kind of error, to cause eligible entries to become non eligible, which is not listed here. This list was more extensive than I am accustomed to reading.

An eligible entry would consist of and American Citizen, age 21 or more and whom is making each entry from the United States of America. In addition are subject to the following:

Main Sponsor reserves the right to conduct a background check on any potential Grand Prize Winner and reserves the right in its sole discretion to disqualify any person based on such background check if Main Sponsor determines in its sole discretion that awarding the prize to such potential Grand Prize Winner might reflect negatively on Main Sponsor or any of the Participating Product Sponsors.”
The potential Grand Prize Winner will be selected from a random drawing. WAIT! Back up here. What did that just say? “ The potential Grand Prize Winner “. Basically right here, without even going any further, we already know that no matter what the winner will be carefully chosen for this sweepstake, when you couple this information with that from the previous paragraph.

But hang on there! It gets even more interesting; despite the fact that I appreciate that HGTV Dream Home 2011 Giveaway designates an outside Independent Judging Agency.

“Main Sponsor anticipates that the potential Grand Prize Winner will be contacted in person on or about March 12, 2011 (subject to change) in the form of a "ambush style" visit by Main Sponsor representatives and such potential Grand Prize Winner may be filmed during such visit by Main Sponsor.”
But they also reserve that rights to select “an unspecified number of potential finalists for the Grand Prize” . I see that any potential winner will only be given a five day maximum to respond with all affidavits signed with all the T's crossed and I's dotted; in all the right places. Combine this with the fact Potential Winner must be able to travel, at Main Sponsors expense; at the time Main Sponsor chooses, or pay a penalty for wrongdoing and get nothing. Someone else could be chosen to instead.

If Potential Winner does not Agree To Sign Over All video, audio or still photos Rights of themselves AND THEIR PET to Main Sponsors, for any purpose, with No further Compensation to the potential winner; they get no prize. Next I learned about their right to Terminate the sweepstake before the currently listed expiration date, but they will post it on the HGTV Website if they decide to terminate this sweepstake. Food for thought! You could give them your information, have a deep background check done on you and then the contest be canceled. What happens to your information?

Who are all these people, behind these fancy names, that are gathering information on the willing entrants and choosing who they will visit "ambush style" ? I'm sure that if your a believer of conspiracy theories you are reading much more into this than the words I have written. Keep in mind here; I did not write the rules, I only read and wrote about them.
