Thinking of all the showers that get taken in my home opened the door to an in depth analysis about when and even why people take showers. I now comprehend why showers are one of the items on most energy conservation lists. When you have a family that does actually stay clean the energy bill will be higher.
It is assumed that people take showers after they wake and before going on about their daily routine. Here is one shower for every household member each day. Many people believe it customary to shower again, before bed, to keep the grime of the day off the sheets. This would be shower number two for the day, for each household member. Depending upon what extra curricular activity, each family member participates in, there are many showering opportunities during the day.
Little Susie has a passion for ballet and is in ballet class 3-5 times a week. Now Little Susie may just want a shower, after class is over, to get all that sticky sweat off. If your lucky there will be a shower available in the dance studio. Little Susie has now taken 3 (three) showers a day 3-5 days a week and 2 (two) showers 2-4 days a week.
Let's let our mind wander a bit more. Oh, its okay we won't let it wonder out of site. Big Brother Bobby loves to play football and has been on the school foot ball team every year. Football is one of his many obsessions, but you know that after the boys get done playing (or just practicing) that you don't really want them too close to you until they have showered! Big Brother Bobby practices 7 days a week and is taking 3 (three) showers a day 7 days a week. So far we have a total of 21 showers a week taken by Big Brother Bobby. Add this to the number of showers Little Susie takes every week, And the 28 a week taken by mom and dad. That is a whole boat load of water right there!
Spring is here and its time for spring cleaning, repainting and sprucing up of the entire home inside and out. Days are spent getting extra dirty and sweaty in the process. Here is another shower to add to the list for the day. I have known people who will shower, after cleaning a few hours, run errands, return home to clean more and shower again. This does not include the shower taken just before going to bed or the one taken after waking that morning. So this person just took at minimum 4 (four) showers for each day of spring cleaning.
Time for fun, sun, sand and surf so we take the family to the beach for the day. We have showered for the day, the sunblock is all over us and away we go out to the edge of the sea. Here we find the wind constantly sticking more sand on us by the minute, so we go into the salt water. When it is all said and done you know that everyone in the household will take a shower after this event; on top of all the other showers taken this day.
Now your brain should be off on a wild goose chase to find all the other reasons we shower like gardening or yard maintenance, building, exercise and just because it is so hot we are drenched in sweat.
When you have an infant or toddler the baby gets several baths a day! I know my 2 year old granddaughter will take many baths in a day. No child at this age can stay clean by themselves, so its up to us to make sure they do.
Take into consideration that each shower uses 25 to 75 gallons of water. Starting in 1992 the U. S. government wrote new guidelines that now mandate manufactures to manufacture shower-heads that deliver no more than 2.5 gallons per minute; at eighty pounds of pressure per square inch. These are in the low flow shower-head category. Studies have shown that when you take a bath you will use less water compared to a shower. I know this sounds absurd, but next time you shower put the pug in and compare the level of water to that which you would put in your tub for a bath.
That suggestion to sticking to a quick ten minute shower does not sound like a bad idea after all, now does it?
