What Planned Parethood Did For Me

Good Day,
I'd like to share my experiences with Planned Parenthood. I have been on my own since age 14. I miscarried, my first pregnancy, 3 months before I turned 15. I was legally married 1 months after I turned 15. I had my first live child at age 16, my second at age 17 and my third at age 20.
Because I was financially incapable of obtaining prenatal care I was referred to Planned Parenthood. I received complete and total prenatal and aftercare for each of my pregnancies. Each child was born healthy and received their checkups and preventive health screenings at Planned Parenthood.
At the hospital, during the birth of my first live child, I requested a tubal ligation. It was fact that I was considered an adult because I was legally married, not allowed to attend public school because I was married, but also told I was not legally old enough to make this decision.
At the hospital, during the birth of my second child, I was again denied tubal ligation. I was informed that it did not matter that I had been legally married (since age 15) and considered an adult in all aspects, I had delivered 2 live children and miscarried my first pregnancy; I was still not legally old enough to make this decision.
During my 4th pregnancy toward the end of my prenatal care, at Planned Parenthood, I inquired about having a tubal ligation after the baby was delivered. By this time I delivered I was 6 months away from turning 21 years old and becoming of “Legal Age” to make this decision for myself, but obviously could not continue producing children I could not afford to take care of.
The Planned Parenthood program told me that there was a rule which stated that if the mother or future children are at risk that the mother is allowed to make this decision before age 21 and I should have been able to have a Tubal Ligation after my second live birth. It had been my 3rd pregnancy and only 2nd live child.
After the miscarriage I actually died on the operating table during the D&C procedure. I was informed that both myself and each child were at high risk of death during each pregnancy and delivery. I did have some complications with my 2nd and 3rd pregnancies; in the fact that I carried each child 10-1/2 months. At 6 months, with the 4th pregnancy, I went into labor but did not deliver till full term. The Planned Parenthood had these facts on record, as did each hospital I delivered my children in.
After my 3rd live child was born I was able to obtain the Tubal Ligation I needed, from a private fund by Planned Parenthood.
Because of Planned Parenthood My children were able to be born and grow up healthy and so was I. The kicker was that I never knew that Planned Parenthood was the organization that was taking such good care of my children and I till much later in life.
Thanks for your time,

What a great story! I'm tired of Planned Parenthood being talked about as if they are evil when they do so much good that others aren't willing to do.Please log in to respond to this comment. Thanks for reading. Please log in to respond to this comment.
Somebody needed to speak up from personal experience because our current lawmakers are in the process of trying to deny women of these services. Good work. Please log in to respond to this comment. Thanks for reading. Please log in to respond to this comment.
Hi Kandi, I will say up front, this article was difficult to read - I have a very different opinion of them. But IF this was all that they did, I would feel differently. I just wish laws were written so that they would have to be honest about what actually happens when they perform an abortion and that they don't just send you out the door with a bag of condoms - as if that could ever take care of the aftermath of abortion and what it does to a girl/woman (the majority) emotionally and spiritually. However, there is personal responsibility and that I am fully aware of. The problem is the lie and when a young girl feels scared, they accept the lie. What I found interesting is that I could go and have an abortion, a dangerous medical procedure with zero counseling required and my parents didn't have to know, but yet (late on) My husband couldn't have a vasectomy without watching a film of the procedure and a counseling session. I think there needs to change on both sides.
Thank you for sharing your story - It's always good to hear it from a different perspective and experience, I shared the other side of it a while back. I am truly happy that they were there for you in this way. Blessings to you! TeresaPlease log in to respond to this comment. Thanks for reading. I have to say that in all the years of going to the Planned Parenthood Clinic I never experienced or witnessed anyone getting an abortion. Everyone I saw were either having babies, trying not to have babies, getting wellness checkups or being checked and/or treated for sexually transmitted diseases or Cancer. Planned Parenthood has many more choices than condoms available in forms of birth control. I tried almost all of them.
Honestly I wasn't aware, until my 3rd live child, that I had been being seen by Planned Parenthood. I thought that it was just a health department where people who do not have financial means for certain medical services.

It is a brave article and I so admire you for sharing. Planned Parenthood is so undeserving of the attacks it faces now. It is important for people like you to speak up. Everyone who sees the value there should speak up. Wonderful job. Please log in to respond to this comment. Thanks for reading and taking the time to share. It was easier to write than I thought it would be. When I saw the first attacks on Planned Parenthood it immediately took me back to those days.
After some time of thinking about how to write this I decided to give it a shot. All the wondering left as soon as I started pecking away. The words just spilled out, much like the Niagara Falls water flowing so freely with such great force. Please log in to respond to this comment.
